The performance and productivity of members are fuelled through flexible 24/7 work and meeting spaces that help them tap into a community of peers to grow their networks while feeling at home.

The history of Workshop17

Workshop17 was founded by Paul Keursten and Mark Seftel, who share a passion for developing strong business and entrepreneurial communities. They wanted to create elegant and comfortable spaces to help all kind of workers and businesses work productively and connect with other like-minded people.

The company’s vision is to provide solutions for the new normal and enhance productivity with a combination of the home, the corporate office and third spaces. Workshop17 endeavours to create workspaces that are:

  • Flexible with the right environment to grow, shrink and adapt to changing needs without being tied to long-term commitments.

  • Friction-free with everything required to be productive, and hassle-free to enable clients and members to concentrate on what they want to achieve.

  • Comfortable to ensure ergonomic and beautiful spaces, with a variation of seating and work solutions.

  • Engaging with interesting connections and networking opportunities.

  • Technologically advanced with corporate-grade audio-visual and ICT facilities. Workshop17 has also developed a proprietary software platform to manage all aspects of flexible work spaces, from bookings to memberships, access control, internet access, wallets and networking.

The co-founders launched their first coworking space in Maboneng, halfway between Soweto and Sandton in Johannesburg. Workshop17 V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, followed in 2015. Two years later, the opening of Workshop17 West Street, Sandton Central marked the start of the brand’s joint venture with Growthpoint Properties. Two locations, Workshop17 Tabakhuis, Paarl, and Workshop17 Firestation, Rosebank were added in 2018. Workshop17 Kloof Street also opened in 2019 in Cape Town.

Workshop17’s extensive portfolio of high-quality, affordable and collaborative work spaces – which are expected to grow to 10 in 2022 – now host over 2,000 members and 500 SMEs, freelancers, nomadic workers and a growing number of corporates, with more locations in the pipeline.

The company has its sights set on opening new coworking spaces in other cities and African countries, including two locations in Mauritius.
